A mindset shift for small business owners and entrepreneurs who feel stuck

If you’re a small business owner or entrepreneur, you’ve likely faced a moment when things just didn’t feel right. Maybe your progress slowed, your motivation faded, or the results you were hoping for simply didn’t show up. The gut reaction? Change everything—your environment, your routine, the people around you. I’ve been there.

Why Change Isn’t Always the Solution

For years, I thought the solution to stagnation was external. When things weren’t working, my instinct was to shake things up. New people. New opportunities. A new direction.

But I’ve come to learn something powerful over time:
Changing your circumstances without addressing your mindset only delays the real issue.

It’s not that changes in your surroundings can’t help—they sometimes can. But more often than not, we use those changes as a way to avoid looking inward.

The Power of Self-Reflection in Business

These days, when I feel stuck or overwhelmed, I take a different approach. I stop everything and ask myself three crucial questions:

How am I contributing to this situation?

What am I not doing that I know I should be doing?

What am I telling myself I’m doing, but deep down I know I’m not?

These questions are not easy to answer. But they’re necessary. They force me to get honest—with myself.

The Hard Truth: You Might Be the Roadblock

One of the most difficult lessons I’ve learned as a business leader is this:
Sometimes, the biggest obstacle in our business is us.

It’s easy to lie to ourselves to justify where we are. It’s easy to blame market conditions, lack of support, or bad luck. But the reality is that we are often in our current situation because of the decisions we’ve made—or the ones we’ve avoided.

We can be our own worst enemy.

A Challenge for Small Business Owners

If you’re feeling stuck in your business right now, I want to encourage you:
Don’t run. Reflect.

Face the discomfort. Ask yourself the hard questions. Look in the mirror.
Because when you start answering honestly, you unlock something incredibly powerful: clarity.

And with clarity comes momentum. Growth. Change that actually sticks.

Final Thought: Real Growth Starts Within

External changes can help. But internal transformation is what leads to lasting success in business—and in life.

Signed,
Someone who’s lived it—and still learning from it.
